Prof Sadeka Halim, former Information Commissioner, shares her views after the debate, saying that there is an intricate relationship between democracy and the media. She believes the media has an important role to play in creating a fair democracy: “Especially in third world countries, when political leaders cannot maintain order, violence is rampant, and the citizenry is not able to adequately represent themselves, the media can be a powerful tool in those situations and can help citizens preserve democracy.” She goes on to emphasize that according to our Constitution the media in Bangladesh must be independent and allow for free expression; but she also warns against the media working like a corporation, and says there needs to be rules and regulations. “Our democracy should ensure the kind of media that in turn makes our democracy function better.”
