IID and the United Nations Foundation have signed an agreement to do policy advocacy for reducing household air pollution (HAP) in Bangladesh. A study by Unicef reported that over 8,500 children die every year in Bangladesh from diseases caused by household air pollution and 89 percent of households use solid fuels, mostly wood, agricultural waste and cow manure, for cooking and space heating.
IID will work closely with the Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves, an initiative hosted by the UN Foundation, to run a policy advocacy campaign which would take IID’s policy breakfast model as the primary form of the policy advocacy campaign. A Policy Breakfast on ‘Clean Cooking and SDGs’ will be organized by the end of November 2016, which will focus on how promotion of clean cooking may help Bangladesh achieve many of the Sustainable Development Goal commitments.
